Sleep deprivation 😴😴 A week of sleepless nights with sick children and I’m reminded how important sleep is for your brain health 😉 I can honestly say my own health took a back seat this week but I look forward to having a refreshing long weekend! 💕
While many know this one to be true, I still hear people complain about how they can’t lose weight. The reality is, you will very much struggle to lose weight if your system is under a lot of stress for a long period of time. In fact you’ll probably gain weight. It’s my advice that if you’re seeking an answer to your weight loss goals, you focus first on areas of stress and lifestyle factors rather than worrying about joining an 8 week “boot camp” with high promises of weight loss. Give your body the right environment and then all the effort of exercise will fall into place. #weightloss #stress

A common complaint I hear is that “I know my posture is bad and it’s causing my pain” 🧐 Posture is largely automatic.. you shouldn’t have to consciously control it. So my question is always what in the nervous system is causing this posture? The biggest cause is chronic stress. It makes us feel heavy, and our postural muscles fatigue quickly, making it feel almost impossible to hold ourselves up ‘properly’. If you’re having to *think* about your posture and constantly correct it, check your stress!
Valentines Day ~ We don’t really do anything.. do you? Wouldn’t it be better if we expressed our appreciation and love for each other everyday?

Chronic high levels of cortisol depletes the energy in parts of the brain, leading to nerve cell death 😱 The area that is most damaged is called the hippocampus - which is needed to convert short term to long term memories, have spatial awareness and navigation skills. For example... ever wonder why you only walk into door frames when you’re already having a bad day? 😆 Bad days are higher stress, leading to lower hippocampus function and lowered spatial awareness. Feel more overwhelmed when driving somewhere new? Hippocampus. Walk into a room and forget why you’re there? Hippocampus. If you’ve got daily signs of hippocampus ‘fatigue’, you’ve probably got chronic stress too. Good news is it can regenerate (thanks to neuroplasticity 🙌🏼) however the offending stressors must be removed to get long term results.
☀️🌙✨ It can be hard to hear, but we must bear in mind that our health when we are pregnant significantly affects our baby’s health. In particular, STRESS (which I’ve been posting about in my current series - take a look at precious posts to read more). If you’re planning a pregnancy, it is best to prepare your body BEFORE your pregnancy. It can take months to change your stress hormones and neurological stress. If it has a positive impact on your own health and wellbeing, imagine what it may do for your baby🤰🏼🤱🏼 💕
Stress and gut part 2 🤗
Chronic levels of stress dampen vagus nerve activity. One of the functions of the vagus nerve is in the gut - digestion, mobility and absorption. If you have chronic stress, and lowered vagal tone, you will likely get digestive issues. You may feel bloated or fatigued after you eat, or have strange belly issues that nobody can fix. Gut motility slows so you may get constipated, or have foul smelling stools because things have fermented a bit too long in its transit out of your body. Low vagal tone is also associated with low stress resilience, lowered immune system function and lower desire to socialise 😱 It’s a downward spiral - chronic stress lowers vagal tone, which means you can’t adapt to stress well, leading to further chronic stress - and suddenly you’re stressed out, your gut is playing up and your mental health is taking a dive. As always, head back to my original post to see what I mean by the word STRESS 😌 #guthealth
Spending time in nature reduces our levels of stress. Do you find time to stop and acknowledge the beauty of nature around you? It should be a daily priority in this busy, tech-focused society, and better yet it costs nothing! #moonphases
High levels of cortisol impact how leaky your digestive tract is. If you notice you are bloated, or have unexplained abdominal pain, check your stress! This is particularly important for those of you who feel like you’re reacting to food but you can’t quite work out what food it is.. or maybe your food reaction list is growing and growing. The issue with chronic stress is that is causes increased intestinal permeability, so undigested proteins end up in your blood stream and trigger an immune response. This is inflammatory for the whole body and puts extra load on your immune system. If the reaction is bad enough, the immune system then causes further gut damage, leading to more and more food reactions, plus more inflammation. And eventually most experience brain symptoms such as brain fog, memory loss or general fatigue. If you’ve seen me in practice, you’ll know I focus on areas of stress before addressing food or gut because they’re so closely linked! If you’re getting nowhere with your gut, check your stress.
