Using an Ice Roller for Vagus Nerve Stimulation

There is a lot of research about the benefit of cold exposure for the nervous system but if you don’t want to dunk your whole face or body into freezing cold ice water, an ice roller is a great alternative to get the same benefit!

What is an Ice Roller?

An ice roller is a handheld device that contains a rollerball that is either stainless steel, or filled with water, and is stored in a freezer until it is needed. It combines the benefits of massage with cold exposure for a wide variety of benefits. It works by soothing and contracting the skin - while stimulating the sensory endings of the facial nerve! This cold exposure and facial sensory input can improve your vagus nerve function (which is why I’m sharing about my favourite ice roller!).

My Personal Experience with Using an Ice Roller

I tested out the Bon Charge Ice Roller recently and I just have to say, this little tool is INCREDIBLE (see my video below). As someone who stimulates their vagus in many ways, I can tell when something is working for me.

I simply placed the ice roller in the freezer overnight, cleansed my face, took the ice roller out and quickly rinsed under water (I didn’t want that sticky ice on me!). Then rolled it over my entire face and neck.

It was so, so calming! I definitely felt my nervous system relax. It felt so good, I would have used it all day.

The best areas for vagal stimulation? Basically in the vertical line that covers your eye and outer lip. Plus roll it under your chin down your neck for extra vagal stimulation and lymphatic release.

Full disclaimer - I LOVE cold exposure, in fact I crave it. So if you don’t love it like I do, you might not find it calming the first time.

One way to troubleshoot the cold, if it’s just too much - is to have it sit overnight (if you’re in winter) in the bathroom and simply use the morning cold! And then move towards putting it in the freezer.

Ice Rollers and Your Vagus Nerve

Applying ice to the face may stimulate the vagus nerve indirectly through its effect on the body's overall physiological response. The vagus nerve is responsible for regulating the parasympathetic nervous system, which is associated with the body's "rest and digest" response.

When the body is exposed to cold temperatures, it activates the sympathetic nervous system, which triggers the body's fight or flight response. However, once the cold stimulus is removed, the parasympathetic nervous system takes over, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.

Research has shown that exposure to cold temperatures can activate the vagus nerve and stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to increased relaxation and reduced stress. This response is thought to be mediated by the release of neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and acetylcholine, which are involved in regulating the activity of the vagus nerve.

Using an ice roller can help promote relaxation and reducing stress through its effect on the parasympathetic nervous system.

Other benefits of using an ice roller on your face or body

Reducing puffiness: The cold temperature of the roller constricts blood vessels and reduces swelling, which can help reduce puffiness in the face or around the eyes.

Soothing skin: Ice rollers can help calm irritated skin, reduce redness, and soothe inflammation, making it an excellent tool for people with sensitive skin or those suffering from conditions like rosacea.

Relieving Aching Muscles: The ice roller can help release lactic acid and other toxins from muscles, helping restore tendons and fascia.

Relieving headaches: Using an ice roller on the temples or forehead can help ease tension headaches or migraines.

Improving circulation: Ice rollers stimulate blood flow, which can help improve the overall appearance of the skin and promote healing.

Enhancing product absorption: Using an ice roller before applying skincare products can help improve their absorption, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the skin.

Calming sunburns: Applying a cold ice roller to sunburned skin can provide instant relief, reduce inflammation, and prevent further damage.

Using an ice roller can be a great addition to your daily routine, especially if you struggle with puffiness, redness, or sensitive skin.
